Course Narrative:
I was able to achieve the, MLO 5 Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion, by demonstrating that have actively immersed myself in an authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environments and have language and cultural experiences, from which I have developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities. I was able to develop intercultural communication skills and strategies, and learned to adapt and respond in effective ways. To fulfill this requirement I choose, Pathway 2: Latino Heritage Community Project: By participating in and completing a community project in a local Latino community, in the target language. The community I choose to do my project was the community in Salinas, Ca. I choose this community because is the community where I live and where I hope to work in the future. Even do I have lived in Salinas for many years, this project really made me aware of many issues that the Hispanic community face still to this day. I also had the opportunity to learn about different Hispanic celebrations that take place, every year around the city, one of them is Dia de los muertos, which is celebrated November 1st, in many countries around Latin America, and also in the Salinas community. I was able to participate in one the Dia de los muertos celebrations in the Salinas community, the colorful decorations, food and Aztec dancers made this celebration special for everyone in the community specially for the Hispanic population. Interacting with members of the Salinas community I also had the opportunity to learned about the needs that they have. Not knowing how to speak English is a problem faced by many of the people in this community. It limits them to finding better paying jobs and they also have difficulty helping their children with homework. The Spanish language continues to be widely used in the Salinas community, and the Hispanic culture has a great influence on the community in general.
