Course Narrative:
During this course, LING 392: Nature of Language & Language Acquisition, I was able to achieve one of the Linguistic requirement for the MLO 2, developing knowledge of fundamental concepts in the scientific study of language, which includes theoretical concepts like, structural linguistics, sociolinguistics and language development in first and second language acquisition. We apply the study of linguistics in reading and writing and we developed a knowledge base in linguistics, phonemic awareness, and syntax, and applying them in the completion of a research papers and learning about current issues in society.
This course introduced me to the nature of linguistic, focusing in different areas. Something interesting that I learn during this class was the variation of different dialects in English, that we have in the United States. It was interesting to learned that even in a language one can find a diverse way of communication among different area of the country, making each place unique.Through our reading and class discussions I also learned about the fundamental concepts of language and now I have a better understanding of what phonology and morphology are. This course was very difficult to me because it provided me with a lot of new information I was not familiar with. One of the most challenging things I had to learn in this class was transcribing in IPA format. It took me a lot of time to learned the symbols for each letter sound, but now I have better skills to do this. We were also introduced the morphological level of speech which is the part of linguistics that studies the structure of words. Additionally, we also learned the phonological - sound of languages, the physical and acoustic articulation, that we could see in different dialects in English across the country. This course taught me a lot about how the human language works.
