HCOM 312: Deliberation and Advocacy
Course description: Introduction to cooperative argumentation. Students develop empathic and critical listening skills for cooperative deliberation and problem solving. They apply and assess reasoning and argumentative skills on various topics in oral and written communication contexts.
Course Narrative:
During this course, HCOM 312: Deliberation and Advocacy, I was able to achieve Language Proficiency for the MLO 1, in order to able to communicate effectively in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational methods, and in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency. During this course we were introduce to cooperative argumentation, which helped us developed empathy and critical listening skills for cooperative deliberation and problem solving. We apply reasoning and argumentative skills on various topics in oral and written communication contexts. Dr. Lanka did a great job creating scenarios that would help us put in practice the communication skills that we were learning in class. We had the opportunity to share our point of views with the entire class as well as to listen to others perspectives, during these exercises we practice our communication and listening skills. The main purpose of this class was to developed empathetic and critical, listening, reading and speaking skills for successful deliberation and problem solving practices. To put into practice what we learned in class we did several written assignments, as well as individual and group presentations. One of the first works we did was an argumentative essay where we analyzed a controversial issue taking one side of the argument. This helped us to have a debate in class, practicing how to defend our argument in an ethical and respectful way. The Round Table was another assignment that we did in class, this assignment help us practice all the skills taught in class as well as working cooperatively with other members in the group.
